What Causes Black Streaks on an Asphalt-Shingle Roof?

Those dark roof streaks are often algae—not ordinary dirt. Learn why they appear, why high-pressure washing is risky, and how roof soft washing works.

The short answer

Brown-to-black roof streaks are often discoloration associated with airborne algae, especially in warm and humid conditions. The appearance alone cannot diagnose the roof’s overall condition, but it should be cleaned with a roof-appropriate low-pressure method—not a power washer.

The streaks are often algae discoloration

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association identifies Gloeocapsa magma as a prevalent algae associated with brown-to-black roof discoloration. Airborne algae can collect on roofing and other outdoor surfaces, and the staining may appear as uniform darkening or visible streaks.

Warm, humid weather encourages this kind of discoloration, which makes it familiar across Chattanooga, Hixson, Ringgold, Cleveland, and the surrounding Tennessee Valley. Shade and slower drying can make some roof sections show growth sooner than others.

Black streaks do not automatically mean the roof needs replacement

A stained roof may still have useful service life, but appearance is not enough to determine that. Age, granule condition, brittleness, missing or damaged shingles, flashing, penetrations, decking, and active leaks all matter.

Veterans Vision inspects before recommending cleaning or preservation. If the roof is too damaged for the requested service, the responsible answer is repair or replacement—not selling a treatment that cannot solve the underlying condition.

Why a power washer does not belong on asphalt shingles

High-pressure washing can damage asphalt roofing and loosen protective granules. Abrasive brushing or scraping can create similar problems. ARMA specifically advises against power washers, brushes, and brooms for removing algae from asphalt shingles.

A roof-appropriate process gently applies the approved cleaning solution and follows the applicable manufacturer’s guidance. The exact chemistry and procedure can vary by shingle manufacturer and roof condition, which is another reason a roof should be assessed before treatment.

What happens during a professional roof soft wash

The ground operation is as important as the roof application. Before treatment, the crew identifies drainage paths, landscaping, siding, metal fixtures, open windows, electrical components, and other sensitive areas. Plants and surrounding surfaces are prepared and monitored throughout the work.

The complete roof receives a controlled, low-pressure treatment. Black algae staining often changes quickly. Heavy moss and lichen may be treated at the root and allowed to release through normal weathering instead of being scraped from the shingles.

Can the streaks return?

Yes. Cleaning removes the current discoloration; it does not permanently change the shade, moisture, surrounding trees, airborne algae, or roof material. ARMA notes that cleaning results can be temporary and algae discoloration may recur.

How quickly that happens depends on exposure, roof design, drainage, tree cover, regional conditions, and the roofing product. Homeowners replacing a roof can ask the manufacturer or roofer about algae-resistant shingle options.

Questions homeowners ask

Are black roof streaks mold?

They are often algae discoloration, although roof staining can have more than one cause. An inspection helps distinguish broad streaking from localized moss, debris, damage, or another condition.

Will moss and lichen disappear immediately?

Not always. Heavy moss and lichen may continue loosening and weathering away after treatment. Scraping them from asphalt shingles can damage the surface.

Do you clean only the visibly stained side?

Veterans Vision treats the complete roof so the process and final appearance are consistent rather than leaving untreated sections.
